I was originally going to call these “rules”, but I’m not a believer in those when it comes to beauty. If you wanna rock a dramatic smokey eye with a deep red lip to your conservative work environment, then work it. I’d admire your cojones. Here are 5 of my beauty dos (as in do, not Spanish for “two”, haha!) that I practice everyday.
1. Wear sunscreen. By sunscreen, I don’t mean the dinky SPF 8 that’s in your foundation. SPF 15 is the minimum you should wear, according to the American Cancer Society. It always cracks me up when companies think that any SPF lower than 15 is a selling point. Be sure it has stable UV blocking ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Check out this article to learn which ingredients work best as sunscreens. Apply at least 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours if you can.
2. Drink at least 4-5 liters of water per day. Staying hydrated is key to feeling and looking great, both inside and out. Save some money and eliminate plastic by using a stainless steel bottle, like the one shown from Target.
3. Stretch. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or time consuming. I like doing a simple yoga sequence before getting out of bed. First, I start with the cat cow pose, do this for five breaths. Second, I move into a cobra pose, hold this for five breaths. Third and last, I go into child pose for another five breaths. Simple, but surprisingly energizing.
4. Floss at least once a day. Brushing doesn’t get in between teeth where bits of old food can hide. Old food rots, rotting causes bacteria to grow, bacteria produces acids, acids eat away at the enamel on your teeth. Save yourself the root canals and break open that box of floss that’s been dormant in your medicine cabinet. Plus, studies show that people who floss tend to live longer.
5. Set aside time to relax by yourself. We’re constantly on to go with places to be and people to meet. Sometimes we forget about the most important person, ourselves. Take a few minutes a day to escape the madness and relax in whatever way you wanna do it. Try lying on the floor in savasana (corpse) pose or playing with your pets. I love doing both of these to relax myself.
Notice that none of these had anything do with makeup.
